Valentine’s Week: 5 Bollywood Films That Show The Pain Of Unrequited Love

Love. A four-letter word – brings rainbows and unicorns when reciprocated, and hellfire when left unrequited. While we like seeing couples in love, and romance on screen, that is not all Bollywood shows us. It always shows us the pain when one is in love, and the other isn’t. Here is a sobering article for valentine’s week that shows Bollywood films that portray the heartbreak of unrequited love.

1. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

As Ranbir sings Channa Mereya at his love’s wedding, we see his heartbreak, and our hearts break along with him. A singer, he does everything passionately, including falling in love, showing jealousy, and trying to evoke jealousy in his beloved. Alas, nothing works, and Ranbir’s character loses Alizeh (Anushka Sharma), first to a man, then to death. His love remains incomplete, but that is life.

2.  Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa

Sunil (Shah Rukh Khan) is in love with Anna (Suchitra Krishnamurthy), but she loves Chris (Deepak Tijori). Like any one-sided lover, Sunil tries in vain to win her over, even tries to sabotage her relationship, but ultimately comes to his senses and reunites the lovers. One of SRK’s favorite films to act in, it was a pretty great example of unrequited love in the 90s and the heartbreaking songs that accurately portrayed the sentiment.

3. Raanjhanaa

Raanjhanaa hurts a little bit more because Kundan (Dhanush) is always left hanging by his lady love Zoya (Sonam Kapoor) rather than an outright no. He goes crazy in his love for her, even following her and disrupting her marriage to another man. His one-sided love only brings destruction in his and everyone’s life involved and is a stark example of how the fire of love can sometimes burn everything in its path.

4. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

While we were enjoying Kabir (Ranbir Kapoor) and Naina’s (Deepika Padukone) love story, we couldn’t help but feel mad at their friend Avi (Aditya Roy Kapoor) as he kept neglecting Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) who clearly loved him. She waited and she waited and she waited, and eventually gave up on her fantasy to marry Tarun, who loved her, adored her, and cherished her. Of course Aditi also never told Avi she loved him, so we can always keep speculating over whether Avi would have said yes if Aditi would have said something.

5. Dil Chahta Hai

While Dil Chahta Hai is a must-watch film for forever friendships and love in the case of 2 out of 3 friends, Sid’s (Akshaye Khanna) story was a sad one. He falls for an older alcoholic Tara (Dimple Kapadia), who thought Sid was just a friend. Her feelings remain unchanged and her death only saddens Sid more.
