IMDB’s top-rated English movies that you can watch on Netflix

Let me guess- you’re a movie buff looking to revisit some critically acclaimed classics as you stay home safe during the lockdown, or you are just tired of that one friend yelling “Bro, how have you not watched this movie yet?!” in your ears, twice every week. Either way, I am here to help you with a list of IMDb’s highest-rated English movies that you can watch on Netflix.  

Keep some snacks ready & phones/laptops charged because we are about to have some goooood time!

1. Shawshank Redemption (IMDB rating: 9.2)  

Although Shawshank Redemption, wasn’t much of a success at the box office, it received critical acclaim due to its story and exceptional performances by the actors Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. Shawshank Redemption is a drama film that takes us through Andy’s (Robbins) time in the Shawshank State Prison as he is wrongfully convicted for the murders of his wife and her lover. What happens during his time in the prison is a story of hope, friendship, and Andy’s sheer perseverance.  

2.  Schindler’s List (IMDB Rating: 8.9)

 Schindler’s List (1993) is a story of a German industrialist who along with his wife saves thousands of Polish Jews from the holocaust. The film is considered to be the most realistic depiction of life during the holocaust and is often listed among the greatest films ever made.

3. The Dark Knight (IMDB Rating: 9.0)  

The Dark Knight (2008) by Christopher Nolan is a sequel to Batman Begins (2005), starring some great actors such as Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman. Featuring the best screenplay, visual effects, and action sequences, The Dark Knight is a superhero movie that is more than just a story of good vs evil.   

4. Forrest Gump (IMDB Rating: 8.7)   

A drama film based on the book of the same name, this movie stars Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump. It is a heartwarming story of a slow-witted but kind-hearted man who overcomes his disabilities to become unstoppable! Undoubtedly, being one of Tom Hanks’ best performances, Forrest Gump treats you with a whole lot of surprises with its unpredictable storyline.   

5. Inception (IMDB Rating: 8.7)  

One of the most crowd-pleasing, science-fiction action movies of all times, Inception is yet another classic written & directed by Christopher Nolan. Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb in Inception plays an industrial espionage mercenary, who is hired to invade people’s dreaming minds to steal sensitive information or implant ideas inside their heads. If this doesn’t get you excited enough to watch the movie, I don’t know what will!  

6. Interstellar (IMDB Rating: 8.5)

This Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway starrer, science fiction (also a Christopher Nolan movie) film will thrill you, but will also have you bawling like a baby towards the end of it.  Interstellar is set in a dystopian future in which planet earth slowly starts becoming inhabitable for humans. The film further proceeds to take you on a mission to find a new home led by a bunch of astronauts, who are willing to leave their loved ones far behind in order to save humanity.

7.  Spirited Away (IMDB Rating: 8.5)

Spirited Away, a Studio Ghibli animated film, is a captivating story of a 10-year-old girl Chihiro who enters the magical world of spirits ruled by a witch named Yubaba. It definitely is one of the finest animated movies of all times that creates a mesmerising world and quickly makes you feel like its own part.

8.  Joker (IMDB Rating 8.4)

If you are someone who is active on social media, chances are that you’ve already heard a lot about the Joaquin Phoenix starrer, Joker, due to the buzz it created back in 2019. The film is the story of how a failed stand-up comedian/ clown, Arthur Fleck turns into the DC supervillain Joker, Batman’s biggest nemesis. The film is dark and disturbing, but at the same time makes it difficult for you to take your eyes off the screen. Watch this movie for Joaquin’s terrific performance!

9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (IMDB Rating: 8.3)

Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind is a timeless film that perfectly encapsulates love, heartbreak, and the agony of getting over the person you once loved. The film uses a non-linear narrative to tell us the story of an estranged couple Clementine (Kate Winslet) & Joel (Jim Carrey) and how they go through a memory-erasing procedure in order to move on from each other. You might just gain a different perspective on love & relationships each time you watch this movie!

10. Perks of being a wallflower (IMDB Rating: 8.0)

This drama film is based on Stephen Chbosky best-selling novel, Perks of Being a Wallflower. It is a story of an alienated teenage boy, who is then befriended by a group of seniors in his freshman year of high school. Logan Lerman as Charlie, Emma Watson as Sam & Ezra Miller as Patrick in the movie teach you to own your emotions, be it love, happiness, grief or pain.
