The Bangladesh Liberation war of 1971 between India and Pakistan is one of the monumental parts of our history. Even though it lasted only 13 days, it impacted both the nations immensely, also leading to the formation of present Bangladesh. The day Pakistan surrendered is celebrated in India as ‘Vijay Divas’, falling on Dec 16th. To celebrate this day, let’s look at the films based on this war.
1. Hindustan Ki Kasam
The first ever film made on the 1971 war, Hindustan Ki Kasam did not do well at the box office. Directed by Chetan Anand, this film starred Raaj Kumar, Balraj Sahni, Amjad Khan, Amrish Puri, etc. Focusing majorly on the role the Indian Air Force played in the war, this film is a war classic.

One of the greatest films of the Indian film industry, Border has an immovable place in our hearts. Not many people know that this movie is based on one of the first clashes between Indo-Pak during the 1971 war – the battle of Longewala, Rajasthan. The movie, with its heartbreaking yet patriotic songs and a storyline that would move the stoic to tears, shows the bravery of 120 Indian soldiers against 2000-3000 Pakistani soldiers.

4. 16 December
This spy thriller features a sinister plot to uncover a deadly mission to destroy Delhi with a nuclear bomb on Dec 16, the day that marks India’s victory in the Indo-Pak war of 1971. With a cast that includes Danny Denzongpa and Milind Soman, this film shows how white collar crimes are also a huge part of terrorist activities, and how India must always stay alert.

Also based on the escape attempts of prisoners of war, Deewar is one of the most heart-wrenching war films there is. 33 years after his father has been captured as a prisoner from the Indo-Pak war of 1971, a son sets out to rescue his father and bring him back. With applaud worthy performances by Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Kay Kay Menon, this is a must-watch film.

Based on the true story of a spy who relayed information from Pakistan before the Indo-Pak war of 1971, Raazi is one of the newest additions to war films. Starring Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, it is the story of a girl who gets married to a Pakistani soldier to spy and sends secrets back to India.
7. Romeo Akbar Walter
A spy thriller based on the 1971 war, the story is about an Indian spy who works as a major in the Pakistani Army, but is a RAW agent underneath. With stellar performances by Jackie Shroff and John Abraham, it talks of the sacrifices our soldiers make, by going above and beyond for our nation.
