From critics to fans, Vicky Kaushal starrer Sardar Udham has managed to impress everyone since its release. The actor received an amazing response from the audience as Sardar Udham Singh, the revolutionary freedom fighter who assassinated Michael O’Dwyer in London to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar. Only a few days ago, it was revealed that Sardar Udham was also one of the two Bollywood films that were shortlisted as India’s official entry for the 94th Academy Awards, which got fans really excited. However, things didn’t turn out as expected. Even though the film received widespread applause, the jury rejected Sardar Udham’s entry to the Oscars, stating…” it (the film) again projects our hatred towards the British. In this era of globalization, it is not fair to hold on to this hatred.”
This, however, didn’t sit quite right with netizens! Many took their time out to criticise the decision of the jury on social media.
VILE. FFI jury member Dasgupta rejected Udham as India’s Oscar entry because “it projected our hatred towards the British”.— Anand Ranganathan (@ARanganathan72) October 25, 2021
Truthfully depicting British atrocities is projecting our hatred? Multi-Oscar winner 12 Years a Slave projected African American hatred towards the Whites? pic.twitter.com/XR99ct9lnc
Some believe that even though the movie was not as good as the other movies that got nominated, the reason given to justify its rejection was absolutely bizarre.
#SardarUdham was rejected for Oscar nomination by an “Indian” stating it has “too much hatred for British”.This film had hatred for imperialism but not for any particular race. This film was about FREEDOM and how far our revolutionaries went on,and this is what we give in return? pic.twitter.com/dLaDKftTlu— Dipsita (@DharDipsita) October 25, 2021
#SardarUdham got rejected for #Oscars2022 citing the mentioned reason.— Abhishek Bansal (@ab_hiiiiii) October 26, 2021
If this had been a movie on Churchill then it might be there nominated for the Academy Awards. Sad reality. #Oscars
So Indian kids lathered in poop, begging and fending for themselves in Slumdog Millionaire is more palatable as a representation of Indians. But a realistic depiction of the horrifying acts of British imperialism on our country is problematic? #SardarUdham pic.twitter.com/tQwpYFZ79o— ANMOL JAMWAL (@jammypants4) October 25, 2021
Terrible reason for not selecting #SardarUdham as India’s entry to #Oscars2022—”It projects our hatred towards the British. In this era of globalisation, it’s not fair to hold on to this hatred.”— Sreejith Panickar (@PanickarS) October 25, 2021
Perhaps they should’ve shown the British serving lassi & ladoo at #JallianwalaBagh!
Do you think this was an unfair reason to reject Sardar Udham’s entry to the Oscars? Let us know!
